Argentine Prosecutor Requests International Arrest of Iranian Officials in AMIA Bombing Case

The head of the AMIA UFI, Federal Prosecutor Sebastián Basso, has charged and requested the international capture of Iranian leader Ali Asghar Hejazi, accused of the terrorist attack against the Jewish mutual aid association on July 18, 1994, while also requesting the prosecution of ten Iranians and Lebanese in the same judicial case. The individuals pointed out by the prosecutor in his 201-page opinion are former Intelligence Minister Ali Fallahian, then head of Foreign Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati, and former commander-in-chief of the Revolutionary Guard Mohsen Rezai. Basso's list also includes former Al Quds leader Ahmad Vahidi, who was last week proclaimed as the new head of the Revolutionary Guard, as Noticias Argentinas agency was able to find out. According to the prosecutor's line of investigation, all of them participated in Iran's Supreme National Security Council, which in 1993 would have authorized the bombing of AMIA. The other former Iranian officials who have a request for prosecution are former ambassador Hadi Soleimanpour; then the cultural attaché at that diplomatic mission, Mohsen Rabbani, and the third secretary of the embassy Ahmad Reza Asghari. Basso's hypothesis is that this group of people was part of an illicit association dedicated to illegal espionage that gathered data on the chosen target to make the bomb explode and provided logistical support to those who perpetrated the attack, in addition to covering up the evidence after the massacre. Meanwhile, the prosecutor also requested the prosecution of members of the Lebanese terrorist organization Hezbollah, among whom stands out the figure of Salman Raouf Salman for his alleged key role in the AMIA bombing, as well as his brother Abdallah Salman. The last accused is Hussein Mounir Mouzannar, a Lebanese merchant settled in Paraguay who would have facilitated apocryphal work certificates so that Salman Raouf Salman could obtain citizenship.
